Ultimately, we are interested in predicting photosynthetic responses to various environmental factors by integrating data from metabolite levels, enzyme activities and gene expression studies. More specifically, details of a given metabolic/ transport pathway are examined in the context of gene regulation and respective protein modification/ activity, down to the level of a metabolite. Genomic approaches introduced recently to the UPSC (e.g. EST sequencing, database analyses, microarray technologies) will provide a decisive means for integrating the various experimental observations and enable more accurate modelling of the photosynthetic responses.
