Aspen (Populus tremula) – Venturia tremulae interactions – Functional genomics of fungal infection of a woody plant
Jan Fig1

The overall objective of this project is to describe the plant-pathogen (Aspen-Venturia tremulae) interactions in fungal infection by structural genomics and global transcript profiling.

Aspen and Poplar "Leaf and shoot" blight (a.k.a. Shepherd's crook disease), Fig 1, is caused by the Ascomycota Venturia tremulae,  Fig 2. In summer, infected leaves and shoot wilt and turn black. Mostly younger trees are infected. The fungus overwinters in infected shoots and in old leaves. Infection causes stem deformity and growth reduction. The disease has the greatest impact in intensively managed plantations. Essentially nothing is known about the molecular processes involved in this particular plant-pathogen system.
